Chapter 2

Winter Andrews was the type of man who always got what he wanted – rich, calculating and powerful enough to intimidate, but smart enough to use these assets only when absolutely necessary. Usually, he maintained an easygoing façade, one that lured people to come to him and open up.

With business, they didn’t realize they’d been trapped by someone efficiently ruthless until it was too late.

With women, they were already too steeped in pleasure to care.

One thing he didn’t like was announcing that he was in any way connected to one of the most famous men in the comic book world – after all, this was to his advantage, another strategy for people to not be instantly wary of him. He worked behind the scenes, supervising when his uncle was away, taking over when need be – but always in private, always with the face of ease. He hired and he fired, when employees pleased and displeased him – and when one really displeased him, they knew enough to start pissing and praying he wouldn’t give a very bad reference.

Usually, this strategy worked and had people in awe.

For a very obvious reason, Winter knew it didn’t awe a certain Jade Malone.

On her first day of work, Jade came in early, wearing a brown dress that wrapped her up conservatively and sensible brown pumps. His uncle’s secretary ushered her into his office before he’d even arrived, and he found her there, sitting very still as she hummed a tune to herself. It sounded like the beginning of the theme from Jurassic Park – hard to tell, really, as she didn’t exactly have the most natural singing voice in the world.

Those extra minutes observing her from the partly-open door told him two things. One was that she couldn’t sit still for long, because pretty soon she was tapping her heels impatiently on his carpeted floor, then standing up as her gaze zeroed in on the aquarium beside the couch. In an instant, she was walking towards it, staring quietly and tapping every now and then at the fish that swam around.

The second thing that observing her told him was that she was as interesting as when they first met. All that rosy skin, packed in a tiny, compact body that couldn’t really hide the curves under her modest clothes. Light brown hair pulled up in a no-nonsense ponytail, but giving the idea of silkiness. A pink, rosebud mouth, pretty cheeks.

Eyes that lit with fire and a voice that could turn oceans to ice.

Winter silently made his way inside until he was standing behind her. She didn’t notice, because her back was to the office door as she playfully kept on tapping at the fish. Winter waited, putting ample space between them so as not to frighten.

Her light scent drifted over to him, reminding him of morning dew and innocence.

Eventually, he felt her go still, as if sensing something off. With slow, timely movements, she turned around until she was facing him.

Those clear hazel eyes met his, and a spark of awareness built up in the air between them.
